SMART is proud to have been a partner organization in the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Public Health Corps (PHC) Ambassador Program, a 3-month project to train volunteers as trusted health messengers in their communities. SMART was able to recruit 11 participant trainees, all of whom completed the required training and outreach work. Serving as “PHC Ambassadors,” they shadowed our SMART Health outreach teams to learn the basics of tabling and street outreach, engaging with community residents and sharing accurate, culturally relevant public health and harm reduction information. They are now better prepared to face health emergencies with confidence in their ability to provide guidance to the East Harlem community, joining a pool of SMART Health workers who may be called upon to assist in implementing SMART’s Emergency Activation Plan in future times of crisis.
