SMART Programs
SMART University, is our core Treatment and Prevention Education Program founded in 1998 by a group of women living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in East Harlem. These interactive classes are taught by experienced health care and legal professionals, activists and advocates. SMART's mission is to spread vital treatment and prevention information for women in a safe and supportive environment. As women go through the SMART University journey together, they gain the necessary tools to "take charge" of their lives to stay mentally and physically healthy. There is a peer-led support group that follows SMART University classes on Fridays.
There are three (Fall, Winter and Spring) eight-week sessions of classes. The issues we address are topics that affect women as a whole -- mind, body and spirit. The design of SMART University's curriculum has been, and always will be, based on direct feedback from the women in the program.
